MissionFor over 25 years the citizens of Newton, Massachusetts have worked with their friends in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua in the area of family health (EcoStoves with chimneys, BioSand Filters to decontaminate well water, and Composting Toilets to replace latrines) and education (building and renovating schools, supporting literacy projects and a highly successful Free High School for Adults). Dozens of international volunteers (individuals and groups) join us to work alongside our Nicaraguan colleagues, mostly in rural areas.

Clean Cooking ActivitiesWe've had a spectacular start to 2014 in San Juan del Sur.

By moving the fabrication of BioSand Filters (BSFs) and EcoStoves from our in-town workshops out to rural communities, and asking recipient families to do most of the hard work, we've been able to build and begin installing over 60 BSFs and 85 Eco-Stoves in four villages. The villages of Bernardino Ochoa, Papaturro and Coyolito got both filters and stoves. See http://www.flickr.com/photos/gringopinolero/sets/72157639993257513/ for photos.

And because we finished work in these three villages so quickly, we moved on to a fourth, Las Brisas #1, where Interact (the high school affiliate of Rotary in Woodstock, VT, led by Josh Jarvis and Macy Lawrence) financed and help build another 28 stoves under the supervision of the indefatigable Fidel Pavon: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gringopinolero/sets/72157641215576133/
PartnershipWe would like to share with other groups our experiences in design (including new ways of fabricating chimneys, use of Compressed Earth Bricks as part of our stove design, use of recycled bottles to build base "legs" to support the stoves), family education, and follow-up.
