| Mission | PPAF promotes a business approach for poverty alleviation through multi-stakeholder cooperation. It promotes the United Nations Global Goals and works with business, governments, non-governmental organizations, civic groups, academia and bodies of the UN System. PPAF currently conducts projects on clean cookstoves and fuel, and collaborates with various partners to convene seminars and conferences on renewable energy, climate change, fish farming, gender and public health. |

| Clean Cooking Activities | Since the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, PPAF gives special attention to helping overcome the poverty – respiratory disease – deforestation trap of families’ heavy reliance on charcoal for cooking. This includes research, seminars and recommendations, and steps toward commercialization of low-cost cookstoves, especially those fueled by ethanol from Haitian sugarcane. The Haitian-American business group SIMACT and non-profits including Project Gaia helped launch fieldwork at several sites. PPAF has cooperated with Haitian businesses, farmers and distillers in the South-East and around Port-au-Prince. An Inter-American Development Bank consultancy enabled PPAF to focus on farmers and distillers and on fuel production, cookstove use, and building awareness of possibilities. A UNEP grant enabled PPAF to collaborate with Haitian company D&E Green Enterprises for design and testing of a locally-made ethanol stove, and to prepare a business plan for roll-out of stoves and fuel. PPAF is currently working on the fuel side, to improve production methods, capacity and profitability of small-scale distillers through consultancy and training programs. PPAF also promotes the work of others, including the documentary "Death By a Thousand Cuts" on the charcoal trade between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. |
| Partnership | PPAF has worked in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Madagascar, at United Nations Headquarters and elsewhere internationally, with dozens of organizations, businesses and government representatives, some of which are noted above. The partnerships relate to project design and implementation and to a wide variety of gatherings, including national conferences on fish farming and on renewable energy in the Dominican Republic and a high-level workshop on post-earthquake revitalization in Southern Haiti. At the UN the consultations have included “partners against poverty,” “investment in renewable energy,” “energy and climate change,” “ethanol cookstoves in Haiti and elsewhere,” “bioenergy, clean cookstoves and sustainable development” and others, including several during sessions of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. PPAF has consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council, is associated with the UN Department of Public Information and is a member of the UN Global Compact, the Global Gender and Climate Alliance, and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials. It is also a member of the UN Association of the USA’s Council of Organizations. PPAF-led seminars and presentations bring attention to international and national policy issues, investment opportunities, information exchanges and the potential for poverty reduction and positive social and environmental impact. PPAF project-related partnerships and collaborations give meaning to its motto “Policies into Practice.” |
