| Mission | GAIA Association was founded as a nonprofit organization in 2005 to increase household access to clean, modern, efficient cooking technologies and fuels. GAIA has provided thousands of households with clean stoves and ethanol fuel, taking advantage of domestic ethanol production. GAIA is a UNHCR Implementing Partner and provides cookstoves and fuels as well as other services in three Ethiopian refugee camps currently. GAIA is a winner of the Ashden Award. |

| Other Technologies and Fuels | GAIA Association's core project focus is alcohol (ethanol & methanol) fuels and the CleanCook stove. However, GAIA also operates a kerosene stove and solar lantern program in the UNHCR Jijiga refugee camps. GAIA is also responsible for Save 80 stoves, rocket stoves and other assorted improved cookstoves (ICS). GAIA Association is embarking on work with a new stove that burns bio-oils, biodiesel, diesel and kerosene fuel, known as the Babington Technology. . |
| Clean Cooking Activities | GAIA Association distributes ethanol cookstoves and fuel to households in need, works with government at the policy level to make ethanol a more affordable and available cooking fuel and implements projects to advance small-scale, community-based production and sale of cooking fuels. GAIA Association partners with the Former Women Fuelwood Carriers Association (FWFCA) to run their 1,000 liter/day distillery, provided to them by the Nordic Climate Fund and the World Bank, and built by GAIA, in partnership with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). GAIA partners with Dometic Group and with a local manufacturer, A&H Manufacturing, to make ethanol stoves available locally. GAIA worked with a local company to commercialize the CleanCook stove in Addis Ababa. To advance this commercialization, GAIA is establishing a social enterprise business that will specialize in selling to BOP consumers throughout Ethiopia. Proceeds from this business will support GAIA's charity work. GAIA just completed a national plan for Ethiopia funded by DFID and the Strategic Climate Initiative Partnership to scale up ethanol fuel for household cooking in Ethiopia. |
| Partnership | GAIA staff are trained in energy economics, pilot studies, project development, household survey work, stoves and stove testing, M&E, HAP monitoring and they are developing expertise in The Gold Standard VERs for Carbon Finance. Individuals on the GAIA staff hold advanced degrees in carbon finance, business and management, chemistry, and chemical and mechanical engineering. GAIA staff are considered among the world's experts in ethanol for use as a household fuel. GAIA staff have served as consultants and trainers for the UNHCR in East Africa and have worked on research projects in Sudan, Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Madagascar and other countries. GAIA has partnered with Stockholm Environment Institute, Practical Action Consulting, Ethio Resource Group, Project Gaia, Inc. and a number of other experts to perform studies. GAIA is skilled in contracting and has built substantial infrastructure including fuel storage depots (over half-a-million liters of capacity in the refugee camps) and a new micro distillery. GAIA places a high value on partnerships and collaboration and welcomes working with others. GAIA desires to support the Global Alliance in advancing its agenda for the truly clean fuels, particularly liquid fuels. |
