Position Overview

The Clean Cooking Alliance (the “Alliance”) works with a global network of partners to build a dynamic and financially sustainable industry that makes clean cooking accessible to families around the world. Established in 2010, the Alliance supports the development, sale, distribution, and consistent use of clean cooking solutions that transform lives by improving health, protecting the climate and environment, and helping families save time and money. In alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, the Alliance is working to achieve universal access to clean cooking by 2030. The Evidence & Impact (E&I) team works across the organization to ensure that the most up-to date evidence is used in programming and that a culture of learning is promoted. The E&I team serves as technical experts on clean cooking and health-,environment-, and climate-related issues and supports the translation of research to policy, advocacy, and project/program design and implementation. The E&I team also manages or co-manages the relationships with several key health, environment, and climate organizations. 

As a member of the Alliance’s Evidence & Impact team, the Manager of Research is responsible for leading the Alliance’s work on applying evidence to the design of program implementation and translating research to support policy, advocacy, investment, and business decisions. S/he is also responsible for staying informed on the latest and most critical research in the sector and translating this evidence into clear and easily digestible pieces through storytelling, visualization, or other creative formats. S/he facilitates shared learning within both the Alliance and the broader sector and works with the M&E systems to track progress and develop feedback loops for learning. S/he strengthens the Alliance research networks and liaises with key health, gender, environment, and climate stakeholders.  S/he supports the Senior Director of Evidence & Impact to advise the Alliance team on research-related matters. S/he works closely across all Alliance teams, especially the Advocacy & Communications team and in collaboration with external strategic partners and stakeholders to support research-related activities at the sector, Alliance, and program levels. 

The Alliance Research Strategy:

In 2019, the Alliance began a process to define the Alliance’s research role and research priorities for 2020-2025. In 2020, the Alliance will use the outputs, findings, and insights of these efforts to update the organization’s research strategy and inform the Evidence & Impact team’s role within the Alliance and the broader sector.

The Manager of Research will be one of the primary team members to help finalize the Alliance Research Strategy. The Manager will be responsible for developing the documentation and necessary materials to effectively communicate the strategy to internal and external audiences, including but not limited to implementing partners, donors, investors, businesses, and governments.

Research Translation:

The Alliance serves as one of the central knowledge hubs for the clean cooking sector. As such, the Alliance must remain up to date on the latest clean cooking evidence and strategically disseminate new findings and tools to stakeholders. New research comes out regularly, and partners working on these issues need help interpreting the data, findings and implications for action; the Evidence & Impact team leads this work. Moreover, building an inclusive industry requires a robust-evidence base for decision-making. The evidence base for clean cooking has grown over the years, and the Alliance is increasingly following research that not only focuses on the fundamental questions around health and climate impacts, but around the questions that will move the sector into the next stage of growth including market intelligence research, consumer profiles and characteristics, current clean cooking product offerings, assessments of which products are best suited for particular markets or consumer segments, and broad policy and macroeconomic environment trends.

To ensure that the sector has access to the most up-to-date research, and to bring a more consistent approach to research communication, the Manager of Research will be responsible for synthesizing and disseminating research findings both internally and externally.

Essential Functions

  • Lead the Alliance’s role as translator of research into policy, advocacy, investment, and project/program design and implementation guidance
  • Stay informed on the latest and most critical research in the sector by conducting regular, systematic review and distillation of published research
  • Translate evidence that is clear and easy to understand for multiple audiences and can be used for capacity building, policy making, program/project design and implementation, as well as for business development and to guide investment decisions
  • Ensure that the Alliance and its partners are operating with the most accurate and current evidence base, by sharing these communications via multiple channels and media, including reports, articles, webinars, presentations, blog posts, social media posts, and the Alliance website and others
  • Communicate complex data through visualization, storytelling, or other creative formats
  • Facilitate shared learning across the Alliance, the sector, and within broader research communities
  • Work with the Alliance M&E systems to track progress and develop feedback loops for learning and course correction for research translation activities
  • Showcase Alliance research results at technical society meetings and relevant stakeholder conferences
  • Strengthen research networks in Alliance countries of operation through close collaboration with relevant researchers and stakeholders
  • Liaise with key health, gender, environment, and climate stakeholders in the household energy space including WHO, CCAC, the World Bank, FAO, UNFCCC, Energia and others
  • Travel as appropriate to support activities outlined above
  • Perform other duties and/or tasks as assigned

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

We seek applicants with a love for and ability to efficiently read and synthesize research, and to evaluate research methodologies and findings. We are interested in applicants who have experience in conducting and disseminating quantitative and qualitative research; and/or experience doing data analysis. We will give preference to candidates with experience making complex data more accessible through visualization, storytelling, or other creative formats. We seek candidates who are able to cultivate effective working relationships with people, internally and externally, from a wide variety of types of organizations, cultural backgrounds, and areas of expertise. We seek applicants with a sense of curiosity and inquiry, and who believe in the power of data, evidence, and learning to drive effective change in critical issue areas.

Most of all, we are seeking characteristics which are fundamental to success, including:

  • The ability to think strategically, and the willingness to exercise that ability regularly with enthusiasm so as to play an integral role in developing and implementing solutions to challenging problems
  • A high degree of internal motivation and the ability to ‘self-start’ and work professionally, diplomatically and effectively in a global, often remote team spread across offices and time zones
  • Technical expertise in health, environment/climate, evaluation, standards, economics/econometrics, gender, markets intelligence, international development, political science, public policy or related topic areas
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex concepts in a concise and compelling manner, and communicate technical information clearly to a lay audience
  • The ability to energize others with your visions of the future and ability to find connections between seemingly disparate phenomena
  • The ability to turn thoughts into action
  • Ability to manage and advance multiple tasks and responsibilities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Unimpeachable ethical standards, confidentiality and personal integrity
  • Master’s degree required, in a research and/or policy related field preferred
  • Demonstrated experience conducting, analyzing and disseminating quantitative and qualitative research
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy
  • Willingness to travel internationally (up to 25%)
